About Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock follows the traditional teachings  of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, his daughter Saraswati Rangaswamy, and his grandson R. Sharath (Rangaswamy) Jois.

Ashtanga Yoga was brought to us by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 – 2009). It is traditionally taught Mysore style, referring to its birthplace in Mysore, India where Pattabhi Jois lived and taught. There are six series of poses in Ashtanga Yoga and the poses of each series are practiced in a specific order. Each movement is coordinated with the breath and there is a specific drishti or gazing point for each pose, which helps to increase mental focus and awareness of the breath.

We teach in the Mysore tradition and during a class you will be introduced to the primary series at a pace that is tailored to your needs. Everyone begins with the primary series or Yoga Chikitsa, a series of therapeutic poses that cleanse the body and help build health, strength and flexibility. You will learn it slowly and according to your body’s needs and capability. You rely on the teacher to teach you the series and once you know the poses and the sequence you can take your practice anywhere, which makes it a wonderful system for developing a self practice.

Sutra 1.14

Practice becomes firmly grounded when it has been cultivated for a long time, uninterruptedly, with earnest devotion.
