Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock is moving to Woodstock Yoga

Barbara Boris has graciously offered to host our morning Mysore program at Woodstock Yoga on Deming Street right in the heart of town. We’re very excited for the bigger space, higher ceilings, and the opportunity to be a part of the larger yoga community here in Woodstock. Come join us there!

Mysore classes will be taking place there Monday – Thursday beginning this coming Tuesday, August 16th.

Schedule for the week of August 12th – 21st:

Laura and I are traveling to practice with the lovely Christine Hoar of Ashtanga Yoga Montauk this coming weekend so there will be no classes this Friday, August 12th through Monday, August 15th.

Tuesday and Wednesday 6:30 AM – 8 AM @ Woodstock Yoga, 6 Deming Street in the center of Woodstock. Doors open at 6 AM. Doors close at 8 AM sharp.

Thursday is a full moon. Take rest!

Friday 6:30 AM – 8 AM Mysore practice at our home studio – 15 Chipmunk Lane off of Zena Rd in Woodstock. $15 drop in rate.

Sunday, August 21st 10 AM – 12 PM mysore practice at our home studio – 15 Chipmunk Lane off of Zena Rd in Woodstock. $15 drop in rate.

I’m back from San Francisco where the weather was cool and crisp and it got me excited for fall in Woodstock. Warm sweaters, apples, pumpkins and we’ll be starting a six week Intro to Ashtanga class after Labor Day. Details to come!

Let’s Play

Version 3It’s true the world is distressing right now. Every day some new horror seems to appear on the news. And as Kathy said so eloquently last week, the practice really can be a refuge. But there is something to letting it all go sometimes and just finding a sense of play.

In yoga, there is a term called Lila, which means “play of the gods” but also reminds me to find that sense of wonder, of joy, of sheer fun in doing things that aren’t a normal part of adult daily life.

Sometimes my ‘mat sessions’ feel like sheer fun, reminding me of those childhood days of rolling down hills and the accomplishment of learning to ride my bike or make it all the way across the monkey bars. When I put my feet on my head in a new pose, flip over backwards for the first time, flow through the poses exactly on the breath, catch my ankles in backbending, I experience a sense of play, joy and wonder. How often do we get to feel that in the course of our days?

Sometimes the practice is hard. Life weighs on my mind. Or my body won’t perform the way I’d like. But often it’s thrilling. And when the magic of a new crazy accomplishment occurs I’ll find myself giggling like a child.

Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock Newsletter

It’s one of those days.

The news of the world has been heartbreaking. My child has been demanding. It’s gloomy and rainy. I haven’t had a cup of coffee in days and it’s making me pretty irritable.

Thank goodness for yoga.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras tell us that yoga is the stilling of the mental fluctuations. It is the quieting of the mind and it is on days like this that I am so grateful for the yoga practice that I have been learning over these past 15 years. It’s not an overnight cure but with yoga at least I have a toolbox with everything I need if I just remember to take the time to open it.

On hectic busy days I can take 5 minutes to practice breathing exercises. Maybe I can even squeeze in 15 minutes to do some sun salutations and finishing poses. If I’m really lucky I can get in a full practice.

Everyone could use a few of these tools and a reminder to open the toolbox by getting some time to practice in good company.

Independence Day

Happy 4th of July Weekend!

We’ll be celebrating with practice on Sunday (and ok, we might go to a barbecue or two….). Join us to get your yoga on.

For those of you unfamiliar with Ashtanga, it is a traditional form of yoga that flows from pose to pose in a specific way. Each movement is coordinated with the breath and there is a specific drishti or gazing point for each pose, which helps to increase mental focus. During a Mysore style class you will be introduced to the primary series at a pace that is tailored to your needs.

Ashtanga Yoga fits perfectly with the Independence Day theme. Because you learn at your own pace and move with your own breath, the practice can be either quite vigorous or more gentle and therapeutic.

The studio will be open for regular practice times this week but we will be closed Monday for the new moon. Sleep late!

Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock Is Opening for Practice

This idea has been brewing for some time.

We’ve been in the house for almost exactly 2 years now and the studio’s linoleum tile floors were replaced with wide pine this summer.  And now we’re ready to invite the Ashtanga community of the Woodstock area to come and practice.

The studio is open to all who have an established practice.
