This Ritual Will Change Your Life

This ritual will change your life.

We know it’s hard. It’s hard to get up in the morning. It’s hard to get motivated to start a new routine. It’s hard to carve out time for yourself.

But what if you anchored your day with a ritual that could transform your life?

We’re here to help you make it happen with a fundamentals workshop, regular classes, and private instruction.

Come learn more at the Ashtanga Fundamentals workshop next Saturday, October 8th from 1:30-3:30 pm at Woodstock Yoga. The cost is $40 (10% discount for Woodstock Yoga Center members).

In this 2-hour workshop, Laura Olson will introduce you to the history and tradition of Ashtanga. You will explore the primary series, learn how to create a lifestyle that supports a regular practice, and there will be time for questions. This workshop is open to all who are Ashtanga curious, including beginners! Sign up.

Regular classes for new and experienced students are held Monday – Thursday mornings from 6:30 AM – 8 AM at Woodstock Yoga. Private instruction in Ashtanga Yoga and one-on-one lifestyle coaching with Laura is also available by appointment. For more information contact Laura.

Beginner’s Welcome!

Beginner’s welcome

atha yoga-anushasanam.

Dear friends,

अथ योगानुशासनम् atha yoga-anushasanam is the first of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. There is much to be said by scholars on the exact interpretation and meaning of this sutra but the gist of it is this: Now begins instruction in yoga.

There is no time like the present and it is the only time we ever have so let’s spend it wisely. Yoga helps us to connect to the present moment and realize our true nature. Our breath is a powerful yet subtle force that we explore deeply in the Ashtanga practice. The more you explore it the more interesting it becomes.

We are starting our first full week at Woodstock Yoga this Monday! Mysore classes will be held Monday through Thursday from 6:30 AM – 8 AM. Sunday Mysore classes will remain at our home studio for the time being.

There is a Chinese proverb that states, The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now. And so it is true for beginning a regular yoga practice. But especially right now, while we only have a handful of students, it is the perfect time to get started if you are new to Ashtanga as you will get plenty of one-on-one attention. Beginners welcome!

Led classes will be added to the schedule on Saturdays beginning Labor Day weekend. And on October 8th Laura will be teaching a workshop at Woodstock Yoga that will sweep you up in the energetic spirit of Ashtanga. In this 2-hour workshop Laura will introduce you to the history and tradition of Ashtanga Yoga. You’ll delve into tristhana–breath, dristi and asana; deconstruct sun salutes and vinyasa- the grounding force of the practice — and then explore the primary series, leaving time for questions and answers. This class will be open to all who are Ashtanga curious!

Let’s Play

Version 3It’s true the world is distressing right now. Every day some new horror seems to appear on the news. And as Kathy said so eloquently last week, the practice really can be a refuge. But there is something to letting it all go sometimes and just finding a sense of play.

In yoga, there is a term called Lila, which means “play of the gods” but also reminds me to find that sense of wonder, of joy, of sheer fun in doing things that aren’t a normal part of adult daily life.

Sometimes my ‘mat sessions’ feel like sheer fun, reminding me of those childhood days of rolling down hills and the accomplishment of learning to ride my bike or make it all the way across the monkey bars. When I put my feet on my head in a new pose, flip over backwards for the first time, flow through the poses exactly on the breath, catch my ankles in backbending, I experience a sense of play, joy and wonder. How often do we get to feel that in the course of our days?

Sometimes the practice is hard. Life weighs on my mind. Or my body won’t perform the way I’d like. But often it’s thrilling. And when the magic of a new crazy accomplishment occurs I’ll find myself giggling like a child.

Come play with us soon.

Ashtanga Yoga Woodstock Newsletter

It’s one of those days.

The news of the world has been heartbreaking. My child has been demanding. It’s gloomy and rainy. I haven’t had a cup of coffee in days and it’s making me pretty irritable.

Thank goodness for yoga.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras tell us that yoga is the stilling of the mental fluctuations. It is the quieting of the mind and it is on days like this that I am so grateful for the yoga practice that I have been learning over these past 15 years. It’s not an overnight cure but with yoga at least I have a toolbox with everything I need if I just remember to take the time to open it.

On hectic busy days I can take 5 minutes to practice breathing exercises. Maybe I can even squeeze in 15 minutes to do some sun salutations and finishing poses. If I’m really lucky I can get in a full practice.

Everyone could use a few of these tools and a reminder to open the toolbox by getting some time to practice in good company.

We will have our regular schedule of classes this week: Please contact us if you plan on coming.
